Market and Knowledge Newsletter May 2008
Welcome to the Market and Knowledge Newsletter for May.
One of the main themes that came out of the recent IQPC Process Excellence conference in London was of the integration of toolsets into an all-encompassing quality improvement and operational excellence methodology. It has been a source of debate within the community for some time of course, and the usage of the term “Six Sigma” was noticeable by its sporadic use and not least in its absence from the title of the conference.
This does not mean that business improvement has been de-emphasised. Quite the opposite: making processes more efficient, maintaining flow systems that pull from the customer, creating competitive advantage, ensuring speed-to-market - all these factors are of even greater importance in the current economic downturn. The need for organisations to have improvement and innovation strategies, supported by rigorous programmes, and guided by dedicated professionals is paramount.
The next month will see articles, case studies and interviews exploring how organisations including Kodak, Virgin Media, the Royal Mail and the University of Florence are working towards business improvement and innovation. How are different programmes implemented? What tools are being used? Why is it important to innovate at every level? When is the best time start an improvement programme? (Clue: the answer to that last question begins with ‘N’ and rhymes with ‘cow’!) All these questions, and many more, will be answered in the coming weeks.
In the last newsletter, I spoke about collaboration giving strategic advantage, and last month saw the first meeting of i&i, the community of practice for improvement and innovation. In attendance were representatives from a diverse selection companies representing multiple sectors, all with a common requirement to learn and share. Both the participation and the response was enthusiastic; everyone participated fully, the discussions were relevant and vigorous, and the feedback routinely excellent: the meeting returned an exceptional NPS of 50%.
Many thanks to all involved for their contribution to what can only be described as a successful and informative day. The next UGM is scheduled for July 1st in London; more information will be forthcoming in the next newsletter.
