The first User Group Meeting (UGM) of 2008 is brought to you by i&i Members in partnership with onesixsigma.com on the 25th April. This unique networking event will be hosted by Starwood Hotels at the Cafe Royal Hotel, London. This meeting has been created for business leaders to meet, learn and share knowledge to drive business improvement and innovation.

"If you don’t know where you are going, don’t be surprised if you end up somewhere else"

What is the difference between efficient and effective? - a question commonly asked of improvement teams. The same might be asked of the very change programme itself.

Setting the direction of change is a fundamental precursor to change itself and changing the right things represents effective use of change management resources.

Business Improvers are adept – efficient - at applying the DMAIC methodology to processes and through waste elimination and variation reduction can readily demonstrate enhanced process performance.

If efficient is ‘doing things right’, then effective is ‘doing the right things.

This April, the User Group Meeting will explore how our organisations can focus on doing the right things and will be illustrated by inputs on Hoshin Kanri and the Balanced Scorecard.
Hoshin Kanri: “the shining of the compass’ needle to guide all captains of the fleet vessels to the common goal”

"If we all knew what we all know, how smart would we be? "

The second theme of the meeting will focus on leveraging the learning from any change activity through the development of Communities of Practice.

In an age of superlative technical wherewithal, the capture and dissemination of an organisation’s knowledge at a tacit level remains elusive, yet there are considerable gains to be had from structuring networks in a way that ensures experience and knowledge flows uninhibited to where it can be used.

Communities of Practice (CoP) exist everywhere and yet remain an untapped source of creating competitive advantage through ‘joined up thinking’. In this meeting, we will see how large successful companies such as BP and Shell have benefited from a more studied approach to harnessing and sharing the wealth of knowledge its members have. Significantly, the membership of the UGM represents a CoP for business improvers and so we shall explore how we might better share our experiences.

This is a charged event.
